Incidental Weekend Teaser Trailer (Posted by: Richard Allison, 09/12/2007)

Richard Allison

The bad news: Sincere apologies folks, for the lack of updates since March. As usual, 'real life' things have taken over and we've both been extremely busy, holding up the editing process on our latest film, Incidental Weekend.

The ok news: Post-production has picked up a bit and we're now making real progress. There is a first assembly or rough cut of the entire film (running about 80mins at present). So it now finally exists, albeit in a "raw" state. The next steps are to mix the sound (dialogue/effects/music), grade the picture and refine the cut for pacing and story logic (we may yet shift some scenes around).

But now, the good news: the teaser trailer make its debut today! Hooray!

The editing of Incidental Weekend continues unabated, with a further seven minutes cut together and added to the rough cut at the weekend (now standing at approx. 37 minutes). This included editing our "big scene", the crux of the movie and the showcase for the two lead actors, where we shot EIGHT six-and-a-half minute takes from various angles. This amounted to almost an entire tape of footage and over 13GB of data when captured onto the PC - all for just a single scene! If anything, this gives you options if a car whizzes by at the precise moment a crucial line is delivered in one take, or a boom shadow looms like the Goodyear blimp in another - we ended up using shots from each take, making it all seem worthwhile in the long run.

We hope you all enjoyed "Bulgarian Postcard" last week (57 of you on MySpace, General Zod-knows how many on here) - if you simply can't get enough, why not join our mailing list and become an Incidental Friend? Simply enter your e-mail address in the box on our home page, and we'll send you monthly updates on the production and a secret web link to exclusive content - including two hilarious mini-movies from behind the scenes! We kid you not!

Lastly say happy birthday to our kid, cameraman and editor in waiting (for when we burn-out), Rob. 22 last Friday. PS can I borrow the Clerks II DVD I gave you?

Bulgarian Postcard (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 25/02/2007)

Nick Kirk

Oh, have we got a little treat for you, my internetty friends*. During our week long series of eye-related picture blogs (FilmSpEye), I promised you that a video snippet was on its way. Well, it has arrived and, to prove it, it's here.

Entitled "Bulgarian Postcard", it features two of the actors from our upcoming feature film, "Incidental Weekend" - Andrew Cleaver (who plays Ben) and Nick Obileye (who plays TJ). They are men on a misson, men with a purpose, men with a destination in mind - they are navigating the streets of Veliko Turnovo to find that mythical object known only as "The Set". Armed only with a camera and the keenest travel minds since Alan Whicker and Michael Palin, they will do whatever it takes to get there...

OK, maybe I've oversold that slightly but it's a little glimpse behind the scenes during our time out on location in Bulgaria last year. It can be viewed under the on the Downloads section of our website.

In fact now would be a good time to mosey on over to the site and sign yourself up as an Incidental Friend. "Why?", I hear you ask**. I'll tell for why - because we've got another little behind-the-scenes snippet that is available only to those of you with the good taste to sign yourselves up as our friend, that's why! And there'll be more little exclusive snippets and goodies to come, too...

Feel free to leave us a comment on the video on our MySpace page - if there's enough demand, you may yet see a "Bulgarian Postcard 2: The Revenge"...

Nick
"Old Man River, that Old Man River..."

* It's a rhetorical question, don't bother answering - the answer is "yes"

Sleepless - new short exclusive to MySpace! (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 27/01/2007)

Nick Kirk

Back in the dim, distant and unbearably hot summer months, we promised you a new short film exclusive to MySpace on a monthly basis. Frankly, we utterly failed to live up to that promise. So, to begin to make up for it, here is another of our long lost shorts which has never before seen the light of day (you lucky, lucky so-and-so's).*

"Sleepless" is the name of this particular mini-cinematic marvel and it was inspired by a true story (as all the best fabrications are). Myself and another friend went to visit Rich when he was living out in Hamburg and, due to his basic misunderstanding of how the calendar month works, ended up homeless for a night as he moved between flats. What actually transpired that night shall remain a closely guarded secret between myself, Rich and our friend (and anyone I tell it to when I've had a couple of drinks) but here is the film that was inspired by that night.

It stars Simon Davenport, Mark Miller and Liz Brown and can be watched under our MySpace vids as well as on the main profile page. Go and have a squint. Go on, off you go, I'll wait.

Enjoy that? Well, keep coming back because, as well as more teaser-style pics for our feature, "Incidental Weekend", we've got more video on the way...

*To call it new would be somewhat misleading as we shot it about seven years ago...

Phase II (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 22/01/2007)

Nick Kirk

The imposing edifice of Trickshot Towers. For some time, all has lain dormant and quiet. But wait! What's this? Sounds begin to disturb the darkened stillness. Cogs are spinning, wheels are turning and pistons are... pistoning as the mighty machine of "Incidental Weekend" ramps back up to full speed and we hare around the corner into the final leg.

For some time, our personal lives have taken centre stage but now, with our respective houses back in order, we're psyched up, hyped up and ready to rumble once again. "What stage are we at so far?", I hear you say. Well, I'm glad you asked me that because I'm going to tell you...

With the first phase of our glorious masterplan complete, it's now time for the second phase to get underway (or "Phase II", as I like to call it. Catchy, isn't it?). We've completed a rough edit of about twenty minutes worth of footage and, if I do say so myself, there's some pretty impressive stuff going on in there. Like the scene where....ah, but it's too early to be giving too much away just yet! So where next? Well, our plan is to have the edit completed within the next two months, launch our new website dedicated to the film in the next two to three months, have a fully authored, extras-laden DVD within the next four months and, ultimately, have a screening by... June! Yes, we now have a date in mind for the screening. We hope to confirm that within the next couple of weeks.

Stay tuned to our website, www.trickshot-films.co.uk and our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/trickshotfilms) over the coming weeks and months as we will soon be releasing exclusive peeks, tidbits and morsels to whet the appetite and pique the interest.

"Incidental Weekend" – it’s coming. Are you ready?

Production - And so it ends (almost)... (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 25/04/2006)

Nick Kirk

Day 18. Time has seemed to become somewhat elastic over the last two and a half weeks. The days seem to have flown past and yet somehow it's almost like I can't remember a time when our Incidental Gang wasn't together making a film. We're 90 - 95 percent of the way there with production. We've got a couple of scenes to shoot at Trickshot Towers itself (yep, Rich's house) tonight and then we've got a break before we get back together to pick up the remaining scenes over a couple of weekends in May.

So today, I'm giving credit where credit is due so far. Without the massive efforts of the following people, there would be no Incidental Weekend - just Rich and I stood in front of the camera in a selection of wigs (trust me, nobody wants to see that).

So here's our main gang, who've gone above and beyond and get the hugest, warmest and roundest thanks:-

Jason "Grower, Not A Shower" Croot
Hayley "Knee Prompter" Williams
Nick "Meat Puppet" Obileye
Andrew "The Leopard" Cleaver
Henrietta "Nick, I'm Going To Kill You For This" Meire
Faye "True Fact" Hammond
Hanna "Sick In Oven" Wiggins
Andy "Izvinete!" Roberts
Robert "Meat On A Stick" Allison

But we've had much more help than that - and these people all need their fair share of thanks too:-

Liz "Sweaty Betty's Catering" Brown
Andy "Fridgey Piss Piss" Kirk
Zoe
Marq English
Mark Beardsmore
Damian Morter
Julian Gilmour
Eva Secret
Claire Johnstone
Paul Carter
All at Small Japanese Soldier
Yattya and all at Zafran Kebab House
Tanya and the staff at The Churchfield Pub, Acton

Over in Veliko Turnovo, we had many people helping us including Daniela and all at the local Tourist Office, the local police, Toshov and Milla at the Hiker's Hostel, the staff at Pepy's Bar and the staff at Shtastlivetsa. Plus anyone I've inadvertantly left off the list!

Extra special mention must go to Heather Allison who has lost her husband to the mighty film monster of Incidental Weekend for a good few weeks - which included half of her birthday (sorry, Heather!).

Lastly, but no means leastly, there is one person to mention - yep, the creative yin to my slightly-differently-creative yang; the man that is Trickshot Films - Mr Richard David "Have I told my E.T. joke?" Allison. While I've been lounging around being redundant and doing general film stuff, Rich has been doing all this while still going to work - in fact, he was back to work yesterday! I'm not sure where he's finding the energy to keep going, long streak of piss that he is, but keep going he has. Rich, a weekend off this weekend for you - absolutely no film stuff!

Next steps, then - well, once we've finished off the remaining scenes, the long process of editing begins, which should see us through the next few months. There'll be regular updates, of course, so stay tuned. Also, at some point over the next few months, we'll be launching our dedicated Incidental Weekend website so keep an eye out for that!

Production Postcard From Bulgaria - Part the Last (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 19/04/2006)

And so, after what like seems like an age and an instant, our time in Bulgaria draws to a close. While Rich and Rob are out mopping up the last few establishing shots / cutaways of the town that we need, the remainder of our cast and crew are enjoying a well-earned day of relaxation before our long trek home (2 a.m. bus tonight to Sofia then 7:30 a.m. flight back to Gatwick).

It's been a definite adventure set in beautiful scenery. We've really all come together as a group, had some real laughs along the way (including some borderline hysteria...) and, in a way, it'll be a shame to all go back home. I'll probably spend the next few days wondering where the other eight are when I get home. Although I for one will not miss the constant trekking up and down hills and slopes lugging big bags of equipment and the early morning snore chorus of six other blokes is probably something I can do without.

So what next? Well, we get back on Thurs then we're straight into filming again on Fri, Sat and Sun for the flashback party scenes. After that, there are just scenes here and there to film and we're done with principal photography!

When next I write, we shall be back in dear old blighty. Toodle pip, chin chin and all that guff, old socks and sockettes,

Nick

Production Postcard From Bulgaria - Part The Penultimate (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 18/04/2006)

A busy old day today. A large chunk of filming at the same restaurant as yesterday (resulting in long time spent tring to recreate yesterday's messy table - God bless the digital camera!) and then the afternoon spent filming scenes set in a cafe but actually on the terrace of our hostel! That's a good example of how Rich and I are not quite seeing the wood for the trees at the moment - we spent three hours trying to find a suitable cafe or replacement exterior location (including trekking up a huge hill) only to have what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity when we realised we could use the hostel.

We came back, all excited to tell the others, only to discover they'd worked out the same thing. If we'd all had the brainwave three hours earlier, my feet would be on better terms with me....

Some fantastic stuff for our cafe scenes - much more emotional punch than I'd imagined when we wrote it (all down our actors, not our writing, I assure you...). We're just off now for a brief night scene and then, barring a couple of reshoots and some establishing shots, that's it for Bulgaria!

Stay tuned, chaps and chapesses. More bulletins to come.

Production Postcard From Bulgaria - Part The Fourth (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 17/04/2006)

You will all no doubt be pleased to hear that, despite widespread flooding in the Balkans*, the Trickshot Massive are dry and well and enjoying the clear skies and warm sun of Veliko Turnovo.

Another early riser and, after some initial worry that we may not get into the planned location (yes, it's that old chestnut of the language barrier rearing it's ugly head again), we plowed through the planned scenes at a good pace. We're back again tomorrow to finish off the scenes for that location then have two more locations to film at in the afternoon and evening.

That was to be a wrap for Rich and Nick's Bulgarian Adventure** but, unfortunately, on reviewing some of the rushes tonight, we've discovered that we now need to refilm at one location due to adverse weather conditions (too much sun - bloody film-makers, always whingeing - too wet, too windy, too sunny. You can't win sometimes...)

We're nearly there, folks - the Bulgarian finish line is in sight. Of course, there's still all the rest of the UK scenes to film once we get back...

Nick

*I was going to make a smutty comment there as basic innuendo is about the best you'll get out of me at the moment but I can't be bothered

Production Postcard From Bulgaria - Part The Third (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 16/04/2006)

We have turned a corner, kidlets and childerlings - as of today, we now have more of our film completed than not. Yes, there is no stopping the Incidental Weekend juggernaut.

Some really key scenes today and all four of our actors pulled out all the stops for them. It was a long day but a satisfying one. Particular kudos must go to Hayley and Jay for their continued energy for multiple takes of an 8 minute scene (the longest scene in the film, fact fans!).

It was a 7 a.m. start this morn and we had the location til 2 a.m. but, thanks to a careful combination of cracking acting and careful planning, we were done by 8:30 p.m. However, due to the incomprehension of the Bulgarians to the concept of speedy service, we've not long arrived back from dinner! Also, we have discovered a pattern - every night, a different one of us is served at least half an hour after the others. For Rob, the popular dish "meat on a stick" will always bring memories of expectant hunger and Andrew C will never order that most exotic of dishes - a cheese omelette - in Bulgaria again.

So tomorrow and Tuesday are 5 a.m. wake up calls for two mornings filming restaurant scenes. It being 12:15 a.m. now, I should probably head to bed....

Production Postcard From Bulgaria - Part The Second (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 15/04/2006)

First off, apologies for any incoherence or random rambling -I've been awake since 4:30 a.m. this morning (it's now 10 p.m.) and the day isn't quite over yet! Blogs to post, scripts to read....*

Today is Day Three in the Big Bulgaria House and, in the boys room, the smell of feet is beginning to hang heavy in the air despite the open windows (you try spending days sharing a room with six other blokes in a hostel - the glamour of low-budget film-making, eh, folks?!?). The ladies room has become a temporary sickbay as our magical make-up marvel Faye has succumbed to the dreaded lurgi - we're plying her with cold remedies and confining her to bed until she's better!

Today saw us running through the streets of Veliko Turnovo with a blood-drenched Nick at the extreme crack of dawn, discussing French Crusaders and the Ottoman Empire with a curious police officer, dissuading a little old lady from joining in on a scene with Jay and Hayley and letting Jay beat seven shades out of our exec producer, Andy (all part of the film, MySpaceketeers - he's playing a mugger).

So today that was it for our exterior scenes and tomorrow we move on to the interiors. From 10:30 a.m. through to 2 a.m. next day, we have Pepy's Bar at our disposal to film as we see fit. However, we all need to be up at 5 a.m. on Monday for our next day's shooting! It's gonna be a long one, folks and folkettes - I'll catch you on the other side...

Nick
"Sleep? What is this sleep of which you speak?"

* Yes, we wrote it but that was a while back! We need to refresh the old memory sometimes...

Production Postcard From Bulgaria- Part The First (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 14/04/2006)

Yes, we have arrived and, to prove it, we're here...

After what felt like a hell of a long time travelling (but was in fact only quite a long time travelling), our 9-strong cast and crew arrived in the town of Veliko Turnovo on Wednesday evening... to rain, rain and more rain. As we have four days of exterior location work planned, this was not what we wanted to find -especially when everyone was telling us how sunny it had been the day before!

However, upon awakening on Thurs morning, we found bright sunshine (with just a hint of cloud) had replaced the general damp sogginess of the day before. We would be sticking to plan after all!

So, yesterday saw our first full day shoot at an amazing looking art gallery in the middle of the valley that runs through the town. There was one unfortunate side-effect - the rain of the day before and our general English outlook towards weather left us unprepared for the sun - we all got burnt (yours truly happening to sport a particularly bright red baldy bonce right at the moment...). Of all the places you expect to get sunburn, Bulgaria was not high on my list!

The people here could not be more helpful - the police are willing to close off roads for us if need be and the local Tourist Office is arranging a press conference! These crazy English types with their weird little feature film...

Anyway, another full day today so better head off. Stay tuned for more updates from Bulgaria!

Production - Day The Third (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 10/04/2006)

A half day today (with an actual sit down lunch involved for a change!) and a change to tomorrow's plans (well, the best laid plans of baldies and beanpoles, and all that jazz...). Tomorrow shall be spent planning, packing and checking for our imminent departure to...Bulgaria! (Did I mention we've got 9 days shooting in a foreign country? I did? Oh, well, carry on, then. As you were.)

When next we write, we shall be over the hills and far away...

Production - The Second Day (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 09/04/2006)

Oh, there's no stopping the mighty Trickshot Production Machine* now! We're on a roll...

Day Two in the Big Incidental Weekend House saw a lighter schedule - Hayley's first day on set and both ends of the spectrum catered for with a cracking comic turn from Marq English of MEV Productions (www.mevproductions.co.uk) as agent Bob Grossman and a great performance from Mark Beardsmore as a manipulative manager.

Sandwiches were made and consumed, crotches were touched (well, one crotch and it was intentional - although I did brush Hanna's boob at one point and am still hoping she's not going to sue me for sexual harassment) and impromptu shoeless and jeans-clad office extras were superbly created on the spur of the moment.

Only a couple of days of left before our crew ups sticks and heads for the wilds of Bulgaria!

More to follow - stay tuned...

Production - Day One! (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 08/04/2006)

And so it begins...

As other people - ordinary, work-a-day people - slept in their sleepy Saturday beds, a small group of gifted actors and talented production types set out on the first step of their epic quest - to make a low-budget feature film in a relatively short amount of time. This is the beginning of their story...

Islington, April 8th 2006. The actors arrived, the set (well, kindly donated living room) was dressed and, eventually, the camera rolled. The scenes filmed today are at the end of the film and set in one of the character's Bulgarian house... but an Islington flat makes a handy substitute!

There was laughter, there was fighting (dont worry, folks, all scripted, I assure you!), there was some luvvin' (which included the direction "More hands" from Rich - dont ask, its best not to know what he's thinking sometimes...), much consumption of mock tequila (extremely watered down coffee with a hint of sugar makes a handy substitute) and the creation of new songs such as "Ticket To Your Bedroom", certain to be destined for chart success.

So today finds me tired but satisfied. We made a good start. Were 8 pages down 89 to go...

Tomorrow - the offices of design company Small Japanese Soldier become both a music agents and a financial institution. Ah, the magic of film, ladies and gentlemen, the magic of film...

Stay tuned for more (including, from Weds/Thurs onwards, Production Postcards From Bulgaria!)

I love it when a plan comes together... (Posted by: Richard Allison, 03/04/2006)

Richard Allison

There are now just five days to go before we start shooting! There's so much to do I swear by Saturday I'll have even less hair than Nick the baldy beardy himself. Last Saturday was the first time we had the entire cast together for our big rehearsal and costume fitting. All I need say is, if the phrase 'men in tights' turns you on... just you wait until you see Andrew's "student ball" costume!

Anyway, here's the plan for the shoot: We'll be starting off filming around London mainly doing interior scenes set in the present day. Then, on the 12th, we'll be jetting off to sunny (we hope) Bulgaria for a week of location filming. The only downside to this is we'll miss the opening episode of the new Doctor Who (boo hoo!). When we return on the 20th we'll be time travelling (nice link, see what I did there?) back to 1996 to film our student party scenes.

We may not be able to update the website during our main filming block (8th - 23rd April), so keep a beady eye on our MySpace page for 'live' updates from the set...

Finally, I am delighted to announce some new cast members... Fibber Gibbons will be played by Damian Morter and Bob Grossman by Marq English. Hanna Wiggins has also come onboard as our production designer. We love ya all folks!

Keep the tacos coming baby, Rich

It might have seemed quiet recently... (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 27/03/2006)

Nick Kirk

...but, over at the mighty Trickshot Towers, we have been busily beavering away like... busy beavers* to get everything prepared for our upcoming film.

Shooting schedules have been planned out, Bulgarian transport and accommodation has been arranged, actors have been wined and... well, not dined, but definitely beered, at any rate. Equipment has been mucked about... erm, professionally and sensibly tested (and we definitely didn't shout "Wheeee!" when we were running around with it. No, sir).

So what's coming up? Well, a couple more weeks of preparation, including rehearsals with our cast and finalising some locations and then the fun begins! Yes, on the 8th April, we begin shooting. The point of no return is fast approaching...

But this isn't just a chance to tell what we're doing, oh no. This is a chance for you to help us out, too! Some of you may have seen this posted as a MySpace bulletin (and have already replied) but, for those of you who didn't, here it is again (shameless, isn't it?)

Yep, we're on the scrounge again!

We're currently looking for around 10 people to appear as extras in some party scenes we're filming on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd April at a location in London (which will be finalised soon - possibly Wimbledon).

It'll be a full day, both days and, just to warn you, may well involve a lot of standing around and repeating the same movements! (I'm not trying to put you off but thought I should give you fair warning...)

It's a student party set in the mid-90s so we're looking for people in their early to mid twenties. As this is ultra-low budget, we can't provide costumes so look on this as a chance for a bit of fancy dress! Dig out those old clothes...

If you are keen, please contact us - definites only, please, no maybes!

Take care of yourselves... and each other, Nick

*that's exactly the kind of high-calibre stuff you can expect from us

They came, they saw, they auditioned... (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 06/03/2006)

First off, huge and lovely thanks to everyone who applied to be in the film (all 400 or so of you!). And even more huger and lovelier thanks to everyone who came in and auditioned for us - next time, we'll write something with 26/27 leads so we don't have to choose*

But choose we did (after many hours of deliberation) and we now have our cast. Want to know who they are? Well, I'll tell you:-

Will - Jason Croot
Charlie - Hayley J Williams
TJ - Nicholas Obileye
Ben - Andrew Cleaver
Jennifer - Henrietta Meire

Stay tuned to www.trickshot-films.co.uk as we'll be putting up more information about them soon...

Cheers, Nick

I'm SO excited... (Posted by: Richard Allison, 01/03/2006)

Richard Allison

It's just three days to go to our auditions! Boy, are we excited, and if we're honest - a little nervous too! Believe it or not, this will be our first ever proper casting. On previous films like Eightball, we used friends and drama students, and No Choice was pretty much incestuous with Andy and Nick Kirk playing opposite each other!

Using real bona-fide trained actors will hopefully give our film that extra professional polish. It's going to be a long, tiring day as we're seeing around 25 people in seven hours without a break. At least it should get us in training for the filming proper - or will that be 14 hours without a break! (Note to potential actors that means us - not you!)

The week after I'll be travelling up to Doncaster to see Exective Producer and Bulgarian property magnate Andy Roberts. We'll be finalising the travel and lodging arrangements and discussing potential locations. And going by the photos we're looking at some very stunning scenery indeed. Can't wait to see it for real.

Oh, and this is my first ever blog, and one day, yes, I shall return!

Later El Duderinos, Rich

You like us, you really like us... (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 20/02/2006)

Nick Kirk

Well, we've had a phenomenal response to our request for actors - so far, well over 300 responses, in fact - and our busiest week on the web since 2001 (back when we did our BBC News interview)! Rich and I have been sifting through them all and will get back to everyone as soon as we can.

A huge thank you to all of you who've put yourselves in for it (including MySpacers, StarNow-ers and Mandy-ers amongst others...) - you're all stars! Also, thanks to those of you who've expressed interest in helping out in other ways or just good wishes - it's all appreciated.

Please be patient with us as we go through and reply to people - we've got day jobs unfortunately...

So, what's the latest, then? (Posted by: Nick Kirk, 13/02/2006)

Well, I'm glad you asked, cause I'm gonna tell you... Rich and I are in the midst of doodling out rough storyboards for Rob to flesh out and make pretty (I can only do big-nosed, bulging-eyed cartoon people which is not very flattering for the female characters, I can tell you...).

This weekend, it's a "Boys and Their Toys" weekend. Yep, our new Steadicam rig arrived the other week and Rich and I are going to spend some time thoroughly going over assembly instructions and carefully testing out... oh, who am I kidding? We're gonna run around the place with a Steadicam and stupid grins on our faces! Oh, come on, it's a new toy, we've got to get a little bit excited...

We've put our casting call up on a few actor-based websites and are starting to get some responses through - a big thank you to all you MySpace guys and gals who have already submitted your details (you know who you are!). For those that don't know, our myspace presence is here (and we have 47 friends - yay!).

We've been in contact with the Tourist Office at the Bulgarian town we plan to film in and they've passed our information on to the Mayor! Here's hoping this'll make our foreign filming experience particularly smooth...

Anyway, that's the key updates for now. Stay tuned to this space for more!

Cheers, Nick
